| What to bring:
Ensure that you have sufficient of everything you need, as there are no shopping facilities close at hand, and even in Harare, the shops may not stock the items you need. A few essentials would be: camera, film, spare batteries, video camera, binoculars, flash light, good well-worn boots or shoes, Khaki/green clothing for hunting (no camouflage permitted), Jacket and gloves for early morning/evening, sun protection cream, insect repellent, specific medication and sunglasses. Remember June and July are winter months and the mornings and evenings can be quite cool, so a warm sweater is a good idea.
Itinerary
A typical day will begin with tea/coffee and biscuits. The hunters will then go out just before or at dawn spotting animals from vehicles and then stalking them on foot. A light breakfast is carried on the vehicle. Hunting continues until late morning when you return for lunch
(Sometimes we eat in the veldt) Clients can then have a couple of hours siesta. Hunting will resume around 3.30pm and continue until dark. The day is rounded off with a pleasant dinner and drinks in camp.
Sometimes the game is located from the hunting vehicle and then you stalk it, or you pick up promising tracks and follow on. At other times it can be more successful to lie-in-wait.
As the hunts take place in different areas, you must be prepared for accommodation in different camps, depending on which species you want to hunt.
You can hunt in Zimbabwe all year round but the primary hunting season is from mid-April to the end of October.

You will not be able to take your own rifle into Zimbabwe. Firearms can be hired from Alex Kirkman once you arrive at your hunting area at €20 per day.

Hunting vehicles:
Open safari Land Rovers are used to hunt on the ranches and a Toyota Land Cruiser or Land Rover Defender is used in the other areas.
Time of year:
The hunting season is from April to October. Depending on the previous season’s rainfall, hunting may be difficult in April, due to the bush being very thick, and October is very hot. The kudu bulls are in rut in June and this makes them easier to find.
Health:
If you have any specific medical or dietary problems, please let us know in advance so that we can plan accordingly.
Malaria: The hunting area is not prone to malaria, but you are strongly advised to commence a course of anti-malarial prophylactics prior to your journey to Zimbabwe and to continue some weeks afterwards. Please consult your doctor regarding inoculations. The Zimbabwean Health Authorities do not require proof of any inoculations at all.
Documentations and visas:
(1) A temporary visa at Harare airport costs US$30. This must be tendered in the exact amount, as no change is given.
(2) Tempory firearms permits are obtained at Harare airport, and filled in, in triplicate. As long as the firearm serial No is correctly filled in, there is no problem.
(3) On departure, an airport tax stamp is needed. The cost is US$20. This must be tendered in the correct amount, as no change is given. There are no other documents needed.
Trophy preparation:
Your trophies will be field-prepared and then dipped and packed for export. If you wish they can be fully prepared by a local taxidermist, although the PH recommends that you have it prepared in you own country. The charge for dipping and packing is approximately US$300 – this is the cleaning, sterilizing, crating, and processing of necessary documents for export.
Alcoholic beverage:
Local wine, beer and spirits are provided. However if you have a favourite drink e.g. Scotch, please feel free to bring your own.
Tips:
A small tip is expected by the hunting team if the safari is successful. The usual tip is Us$10 - $20 for each team member (+ 8 people). Tips should be given to Alex to ensure that everyone involved, from trackers to domestic help, get their fair share.
Flights:
The cheapest flights are indirect, and can be found on the internet. Direct flights are more expensive and are available through BA and Air Zimbabwe. We are happy to sort your flight out for you.
Payment:
To secure your holiday a 30% deposit must be paid to ECH Global at the time of booking. The outstanding balance is payable 30 days before departure. Trophy fees other than packages are due at the end of the safari. Any queries please feel free to contact us. It is preferred that US dollar travellers cheques, rather than cash, are used for settling the remainder of the bill in Zimbabwe.
Please note, Cash attracts a sales tax charge of 17.5% - traveller’s cheques are exempt. |
